The problem and solution
How to tackle the challenge
We conducted surveys and interviews to understand people's views on climate change, why they care about the environment, what eco-acts they are currently during, what motivates them to act eco-friendly, and how they develop new habits.
It was essential to discover how people usually develop new habits, as eco-friendly acts are usually habits and routines.

How to be impactful
Through surveying and interviewing different members of the community, we found that people need an engaging and intuitive way to contribute positively to climate change. It is also essential to validate their small act can make a significant contribution.
Our target audience

I care about the environment, but I am often distracted by life and will do my part if it is easy enough.
Behaviours & Attitude

The solution
The solution
The business needs a tool that influences everyday people to do more for the environment, and our research shows the tool has to be intuitive and easy to follow.
People need to understand their contribution and self benefits in their eco-friendly acts. We can satisfy this need by showing the impact of their small acts now instead of future.
Planting at home is an activity for individuals and families which is a habit that feels more like a hobby. As the theory of time discounting indicates, people usually do things they find interesting first and procrastinate on something they find boring.
By helping people start their vegetable gardens, we can encourage positive contributions and develop engaging and rewarding habits. Our user research found that people like to learn new information by watching, reading, and doing, and growing plants require them all.
What did people think of our thoughts?
“Not everyone has the space to grow vegetables in their homes”
“Where can I get more help and information”
“Vegetable can be hard to grow and if they die I probably won’t try again”
“I don’t know when to water them”
We decided to simplify the planting experience by starting with herbs only. Herbs are something every family uses and waste as they only use a small amount each time but need to buy in a large amount. All herbs packaging are plastics too.
How will planting herbs at home contribute to climate change?
Growing herbs may not help climate change globally, but it encourages people to grow edible plants at home. We can reduce our carbon footprint on food and reduce food waste and plastic packaging as a long-term effect.
Where our idea came from
Local supermarkets are already encouraging people to grow edible plants at home.
However, not many people can grow these plants successfully as there are not enough help while they are growing their plants.
So we had a look at some planting apps and websites which gives information about how people can grow plants correctly. The pain point though is that there is no way to ask for help or track the progress of people’s plant growth

How to enhance people's success in planting
Tracking functions are helpful for people to know what they should do and what to expect when they are planting, which can increase their chance of success.
We can refer to menstruation and pregnancy tracking racking systems, which allow people to note alarming symptoms and set reminders to help them do certain things correctly.
People can also keep a personal diary to see an overview of their activities or progress.

What's next
What's next?
It would be ideal for conducting a usability test to see how intuitive the current onboarding process and wireframe are. I want to incorporate a forum function in later stages for people to share their experiences and knowledge, which bring in the sense of community. In later stages, I want to apply gamification, where people gain virtual/physical rewards and virtually how many households are planting food at home, which engages users while waiting for harvest.

What did I learn?
I have learnt that keeping people engaged and making things simple is the key to tool designs. Understanding the motivation behind people's behaviour can discover the real problem our client needs to know, which helps the organisation reach their goal.
